This is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, that as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it” 2 John 6
God considers it love when we walk in His commandments. We also should consider it love. Do you not do the things your loved ones ask of you because you love them? If you love someone you honor them. This is the greatest way of showing love to God, by honoring Him and His commandments.
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and GREATEST commandment.” Matthew 22:37 & 38
There it is. His first commandment is that He asks us to love Him with ALL our heart, ALL our soul and ALL our mind. That’s all…. a lot! That is everything! When we said yes to Him, when we gave our life to Him and committed to do this one commandment we are essentially saying, I give you everything! I give you all my heart’s desires, I lay them at Your feet. Everything that is in my soul, my very being, I make it Yours. And all my thoughts, every thought I think I put them in Your hands.
Have you ever sat and thought about all the thoughts that go through your mind? All the things you allow in there? It’s a lot. Is it pleasing to God? Probably not all of it. I know not all my thoughts are to His liking. But He tells us to take EVERY thought captive to the mind of Christ. Giving over every thought, good and bad, is actually worship to Him. In doing that we are saying that we choose to renew our minds and thoughts and try to have a mind of Christ.
For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.” 1 John 5:3
You may be thinking, “Yeah right! That is a lot!” But truly. His commandments are for our good. They are for our protection and in our best interest to follow them. And we do them because we love Him. I did a quick word search of “His commandments are” and here is what I have found:
- His commandments are sure… meaning: firmly established, reliable or trustworhy (Psalm 111:7)
- His commandments are faithful… meaning: Loyal (Psalm 119:86)
- His commandments are my delights… meaning: Extreme satisfaction or great pleasure (Psalm 119:143)
- His commandments are truth… meaning: Fact or actuality (Psalm 119:151)
- His commandments are righteousness… meaning: upright, just, straight, innocent, true, sincere (Psalm 119:172)
So basically His commandments are reliable, loyal, great pleasure, fact, just and upright. They are good! Are they easy? No. But we gain extreme satisfaction in following His commandments! Why? Because we in turn feel His joy and great satisfaction in us as we try to walk in His footsteps and continually try to love Him better and more deeply! He is not going to hate you when you fail at it, because you most likely will. But He loves the journey, He loves us in our weakness, and He loves our faint “YES!” to Him! It makes His heart smile to know you are trying. He is worthy of honor and praise! Let us run into Him, unhindered, with open arms! He gave His all for us, surely we can return the favor and give our all and love Him back! What do we have to lose besides our pride? We gain so much! The love of an eternal King!!
Until tomorrow! Tomorrow we read 3 John.
