Day 7: Be Imitators of Christ

Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God.” 3 John 1:11

Here we are friends. My last blog post for this challenge. This has been a really great challenge for me and has caused me to get into the word daily! I LOVE IT!

So here John is calling us to be imitators of good. Why? Because he says we are of God. He doesn’t say to “be” good. He says to be “imitators” of good. Ok. So now that we got that down, what is good? Well there are plenty of things that could come to mind that are so called “good”. But if we are talking about the same good as John, I believe he is saying Jesus. Jesus is good. It is stated several times in the word, saying things like “praise Him for He is good”. So Jesus is love and He is good! He is the definition of both. I also looked up imitators and it also is stated several times in the word, but not in just terms of good, but as in be imitators of Christ.

Therefore be imitators of God as dear children And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.” Ephesians 5:1 & 2

In being imitators of good, we should probably imitate the Bible’s definition of good. God, Jesus Christ. For God IS good. Jesus walk out goodness, He walked out love. If we truly want to know Him to be like Him, to “imitate” Him, we need to study Him. We need to dig deep and find out who He really was, what moved His heart, what motivated Him. Goodness! Just writing this out right now is really speaking to me! Sorry, I read this earlier today, but it is all hitting me now. I do not imitate Him half as much as I think I do. The realization of being an imitator of Him is just so huge! To be able to love rightly and to BE love can only come from the One who IS love! We must imitate Him to know how to do this! There is so much we can learn from Him. Even I am not taking the moment to do it! We need to take time to get to know Him more!

Whoa. Ok. Anyway, to try and tie it all together here is what I have gleaned from John 1, 2 & 3.

  1. We need to walk like Him
  2. We need to walk our life in the light, being an open and honest book
  3. We should not only say we love, but we need to SHOW love. Actions speak louder than words
  4. We are only able to love because God loved us first. He gives us the ability to love. So to know how to love, go to the source of love, God.
  5. He is not a deaf God. He hears you and your cries and He DESIRES to answer them… in His time. Do not give up and you must believe that He answers
  6. To show love to God is to follow Him and His commandments. And the 1st commandment is: To love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, soul and mind. EVERYTHING.
  7. Imitate Him.

So, imitate Jesus. How? By living our life in the light and being a honest and open people, SHOWING and being love, receiving love from the Father to love others rightly, believing and trusting that God hears and answers you, doing as He commands by loving Him with all that you are. Jesus did all these things. We need to be Christ-like. The definition of christian is:

ChrisΒ·tian adj.

1. Professing belief in Jesus as Christ or following the life and teachings of Jesus.
2. Relating to or derived from Jesus or Jesus’s teachings.
3. Manifesting the qualities or spirit of Jesus; Christlike.
4. Showing a loving concern for others; humane.
n.

1. One who professes belief in Jesus as Christ or follows the religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus.
2. One who lives according to the teachings of Jesus.
I thinks that explains it pretty well there πŸ™‚ so I will end there. Everything I wrote about this week all pertains to how we should imitators of Christ. It not only pertains to it, but gives you a bit of an outline or guideline in how we can truly imitate the One we love.
I hope this week has blessed your heart as much as it has mine! I am planning another study πŸ™‚ I will keep you updated! Bless you!! Please feel free to share any thoughts or comments! I love to hear what people are thinking πŸ™‚

To imitate to me, is like when I am teaching class at the Y and displaying all the moves and then everyone follows/imitates…to me it’s the same as Christ has shown us the “moves” of how to walk in this life and all we have to do is choose to get in the game and follow. It takes time to learn a routine for me to be able to teach it, but the more you work on it the better you become just as in Christ, the bottom line is to keep striving after! It takes time and commitment and many times we screw things up and trip over ourselves and others but the more consistent we are the better we become…day by day submitted and open to change πŸ™‚
